Disability Insurance

Disability insurance has the same concept as life insurance and is equally important to purchase.  If you pass away, your life insurance policy will leave money for your family to continue to live the way of life they are used to.  If you become disabled or become mentally ill, your insurance policy will give you money to help pay for your medical condition and provide you a portion of the income you are used to receiving.  This allows for you and your family to not be stressed out over financial matters.

Many employers provide disability insurance; however, it is important to look over the policy and buy any additional insurance that would be necessary to provide for your family.  Many company insurance policies will not cover long-term disabilities and will only cover a smaller percentage of your income.  Separate policies from insurance companies will typically cover more of your lost income.

It is crucial to buy a disability insurance policy before you become disabled, even if you are 100 percent healthy. In this way, disability insurance works the same as health insurance.  Your disability insurance will make you go through a waiting period or turn you down completely if you are already disabled.  At this point, you would have to rely on Social Security disability benefits and that will not provide nearly the same amount as a separate disability insurance policy.

There is no way you could continue to live the same way of life you were used to on Social Security. When shopping for disability insurance, make sure you shop around for quotes to get the right plan for you and the best prices.
